Saddam rejects exile ultimatum as world braces for war

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has rejected an ultimatum to leave Iraq with his sons, setting the stage for the United States and Britain to launch military action designed to disarm him and end his rule.

US President George W Bush gave Saddam 48 hours -- until early Thursday Baghdad time -- to flee or face removal at the hands of the 280,000 US and
British troops massed around his borders.

The White House said US-led troops would enter Iraq to hunt for banned weapons even if Saddam capitulates and goes into exile with his two sons Uday and Qusay.

Saddam appeared in military uniform on state television, which quoted him telling his Cabinet he would defy the massive force arrayed against him and emerge the victor.

Iraq's UN ambassador warned all Americans would be at risk, whether inside or outside Iraq, if war came. "This is a war. So how can you have a safe place in the war," Iraqi envoy Mohammed Aldouri said.

The Bush administration has announced it is raising the national terrorist alert level to its second highest.

"Iraqi state agents, Iraqi surrogate groups, other regional extremist organizations and ad hoc groups or disgruntled individuals may use this time period to conduct terrorist
attacks against the United States," Mr Ridge warned.

It's sureal that the war is impending. War was something one read in the papers, or in books, or hear about, never thinking that it could one day happen. And it's happening. Iraq is given till tommorrow to make a decision - to be exiled from Iraq. The thing is, I can understand Bush's argument. Weapons of mass destruction are dangerous. More so if these weapons are in the hands of a country like Iraq. After Sept 11th, we all can see how terrorist attacks can result in. Bush is certainly not taking any chances. On the other hand, who likes war? It will not only affect the US, Iraq and their immediate allies, but the whole world.

It's weird to think that tommorrow, war will begin. When will it stop?
