So irritating

Recently NKF/Singtel has been sending out smses telling us something along the lines of 'If you key in SUCKER to 12345, you'll get A LOT OF PRIZES!! Sms now!'. Similarly, on tv, they have extras going 'Wow!! If you call 1900-112-8888 now you get to win 25 cars and 37 condominiums! What are you waiting for!!! CALL NOW!!'

It irritates me to no end.

Firstly, the advert is just too fake. Is it so hard to feign excitment? So irrtating.

Secondly (and seriously), it is so unethetical! I mean, how can a corporation this huge resort to something like this? You put the telephone number there in font size 1000 and then in extremely small print (that probably you need to be like 2 inches from the screen to see) it says one call is 5 bucks.

Honestly, I'm not against the NKF for it's lifesaving facilities. I do acknowledge that they do a good job in making dialysis affordable for everyone, and as a result they saved so many lives. That's good work.

But how misleading are the methods they get people to donate? Granted, the NKF show has been around for so long, people would know that it costs money to call in. But still! It is just so... misleading and frankly I feel it's unthetical. My neighbour's kid called up a bill of 300 plus last year cause - as he told his mother - that he didn't know it costs money, you can win stuff, and they have this exciting voice recording thing.

I just don't get why. Is it so hard to get Singaporeans to part with their money? Do we have to resort to insidious advertising to get people to make a 5 dollars donation? Do we have to give people 30 dollar gifts so that they'll make a 10 dollar donation? Are we so heartless that charity shows have to practically shove images of dying patients into our faces? Is it absolutely necessary to make this whole thing into a big sob-fest where we are purely motivated to donate cause the fear appeal was getting to us?

I told someone before, it's so ironic; these charity shows are a big joke. How ironic that artistes are trying to 'save' people who are dying by doing death defying stunts? They're putting their lives at risk doing weird stunts ... all in the name of getting donations for the patients whose lives are at risk. Isn't that making a joke out of the whole thing? The idea is to remind people how precious life is, not sending out the message 'well see, I'm able bodied, I can afford to do this to SAVE YOU!'

Ok la... I think it's great that the artistes are actually doing something to help the patients. I just think there's another way to go about doing it other than putting your lives at risk.
